Rubina Francis Secures Bronze in Women’s 10m Air Pistol at Paris Paralympics
Chateauroux, August 31: Exhibiting remarkable poise and determination, Rubina Francis claimed India’s fourth shooting medal at the Paris Paralympics, capturing bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol SH1 event. Competing in a field that included the defending champion and the world record holder, the 25-year-old scored a total of 211.1 points to secure third place in the eight-woman final, having earlier qualified in seventh position.
In an outstanding performance, Iran’s Javanmardi Sareh clinched her third consecutive Paralympics gold with 236.8 points, while world record holder Ozgan Aysel from Turkey took silver with 231.1 points. Francis’ achievement marks India’s fifth overall medal in the Paris games and her distinction as the first Indian woman pistol shooter to earn a Paralympic medal.
Rubina’s qualification for the Games was secured just days before departure under the bipartite rule. Hailing from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, she was born with clubfoot but overcame her condition, inspired by legendary Indian shooter Gagan Narang. Her journey in shooting began in 2015, leading to significant progress under coaches Jai Prakash Nautiyal and Subhash Rana at the MP Shooting Academy and Gun for Glory Academy.
This is her second Paralympics outing, where she improved from a seventh-place finish in Tokyo. Reflecting on her performance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised her focus and perseverance, calling it “yet another proud moment for India.”
Rubina demonstrated consistent skill during the final, starting strong with third place after the first 10 shots. Despite briefly falling to fourth place, she rebounded to secure her bronze finish. Her earlier accomplishments include a gold medal at the 2022 World Shooting Para Sports Championships in Al Ain, UAE.
Rubina’s story is a testament to her resilience and the impact of sport in overcoming adversity, as she continues to inspire with her shooting prowess.
