Heart-Wrenching Small Plane Crash Near Portland: Townhomes Hit, One Resident Missing
Plane Crash in Oregon Sparks Townhouse Fire, Leaves One Resident Missing
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A small plane, believed to carry two individuals, crashed into a row of townhouses east of Portland on Saturday morning, igniting a major fire and leaving at least one resident unaccounted for. Gresham Fire Chief Scott Lewis reported that fire crews are contending with significant structural damage to the townhomes, and the presence of fatalities remains unconfirmed.
Images and footage from local station KGW-TV depict one townhouse engulfed in flames and black smoke billowing from adjacent homes. The fire spread to four townhouses, displacing up to six families. Two people received treatment at the scene, though the specifics of their injuries were not disclosed.
The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft as a twin-engine Cessna 421C, which crashed around 10:30 a.m. near Troutdale Airport, approximately 30 minutes east of downtown Portland. The crash toppled a utility pole and power lines, sparking a brush fire in a nearby field.
The plane was fragmented upon impact in the residential area of Fairview. The first report of the fire came from Troutdale Airport’s control tower, noted Chief Lewis, who mentioned that there were no distress calls from the aircraft before it crashed.
The National Transportation Safety Board is spearheading the investigation. An agency spokesperson confirmed they are gathering information but did not provide further details. Troutdale Airport is characterized on its website as a "flight training and recreational airport."
