Assam Polls 2026: 722 Candidates in Fray — High-Stakes Race
A total of 722 candidates will contest the Assam Legislative Assembly elections 2026 after the nomination withdrawal process concluded, official records show, setting up a multi‑cornered battle across the state’s 126 constituencies. The final list reduces the field and crystallises the contests parties will now intensify ahead of polling.
According to election officials, 815 individuals had originally filed a combined 1,389 nomination papers. Following the scrutiny of papers, 789 candidates were declared eligible to stand for election. On the final day allowed for withdrawals, 67 candidates pulled their nominations, bringing the contesting figure to 722.
The adjusted roster averages roughly 5.7 candidates per constituency, underscoring the crowded nature of many seats and the likelihood of fragmented vote shares. Such multi‑cornered contests could amplify the importance of local alliances, tactical campaigning and candidate selection for major and regional parties alike.
With nominations now closed, political parties and candidates are expected to shift focus to campaigning, voter outreach and seat‑level strategies across Assam as they prepare for the 2026 polls.
