Dhubri Nominations Peak on Final Day: 5 Multi-Candidate Contests

Dhubri, Mar 23: The final day for filing nominations for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections saw intense political activity across Dhubri town on Monday, with candidates from major parties and independents converging at the District Commissioner’s office to submit papers for five constituencies. Candidates from Golakganj (6), Gauripur (7), Dhubri (8), Birsing Jarua (9) and Bilasipara (10) completed their nominations, making March 23 the busiest day of the filing period.

Thousands of supporters accompanied candidates, packing streets-especially along G.T.B. Road-and causing severe traffic congestion that disrupted movement for several hours. The large turnouts underlined high local engagement ahead of polling.

Congress filed several high-profile nominations. Dhubri candidate Bebi Begum registered her papers and voiced confidence in victory, saying neither the BJP nor the AIUDF would be decisive in the constituency while criticising both parties. In Golakganj, Congress nominee Kartik Roy arrived with a large procession, and Wazed Ali Choudhury completed formalities as the party’s candidate in Birsing Jarua.

The BJP fielded Uttam Prasad in Dhubri, Madhabi Das in Birsing Jarua and Ashwini Kumar Roy in Golakganj. After filing, Madhabi Das criticised her Congress rival Wazed Ali Choudhury. AIUDF contenders were active across the district: Nazrul Haque filed from Dhubri and criticised Bebi Begum while suggesting AIUDF could extend support to the Congress in government formation if required. Nijanur Rahman filed from Gauripur, and Sabana Akhtara and Ali Akbar Mia filed from Bilasipara and Birsing Jarua respectively.

Gauripur witnessed particularly busy proceedings, with Raijor Dal’s Abul Miya submitting his nomination after a rally and AGP’s Mehtabul Haque also entering the contest. In Bilasipara, independent Sheikh Hedayatullah filed his papers, and AGP candidate Jibesh Roy-contesting as part of the AGP-BJP alliance and currently the Chief Executive Member of the Kamatapur Autonomous Council-also registered.

Adding a fractious element to the race, independent Dr Reza Amin, a former senior AIUDF functionary, filed from Birsing Jarua and sharply criticised the party leadership, calling AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal a “betrayer” and vowing to challenge the party politically in Dhubri.

According to official estimates, 1,220,384 voters across the five assembly seats will vote at 1,548 polling stations on April 9. With nominations complete, Dhubri district faces intensified, multi-cornered contests across all constituencies as parties and independents move into the campaign phase.
