Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the Lok Sabha at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 23, to focus on developments and concerns arising from the ongoing West Asia conflict and its implications for India’s energy security and supply chains.
Earlier on Sunday, March 22, Mr. Modi chaired a high-level review of the petroleum, crude oil, gas, power and fertiliser sectors to assess preparedness and ensure uninterrupted supplies amid the evolving crisis in West Asia. The meeting examined logistics, distribution networks and contingency measures intended to prevent disruptions to essential services.
Officials briefed the prime minister on current fuel availability and the steps being taken to safeguard India’s energy security, including measures to maintain adequate strategic reserves and strengthen supply chains against volatility in international markets. According to government sources, proactive actions are under way to shield consumers and industry from price shocks and supply interruptions.
The review came as global energy markets remained on edge because the conflict affects a region that supplies a large share of the world’s oil and gas. Officials flagged concerns about possible disruptions to key shipping routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, and the wider risk such blockages pose to international trade and supply chains. Mr. Modi has emphasised the need to keep international shipping lanes open and secure.
On March 22, the prime minister spoke with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the regional situation, underlining the importance of peace, stability and secure maritime routes. To reduce dependence on the Gulf, India has been diversifying crude and gas imports, increasing purchases from countries such as the United States, Russia and African suppliers including Nigeria; officials said nearly 70 percent of India’s oil imports now come from sources outside the Gulf region.
The government has also stepped up measures to manage LPG supplies, including sourcing liquefied petroleum gas from the United States to pre-empt shortages. While some concerns over LPG availability persist, officials reported no disruption at the consumer level and noted a significant rise in online bookings.
