Historic Uprising at Shambhu Border: Vinesh Phogat Joins Massive Farmers’ Protest in a Unifying Show of Strength
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat has joined the ongoing farmers’ protest at the Shambhu border between Haryana and Delhi, urging the Central government to fulfill its promises. For 200 days, hundreds of farmers have been camped there since February 13, demanding a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for their crops.
Expressing her concerns, Vinesh Phogat emphasized that the country’s progress is hindered when its citizens are forced to protest on the streets. She highlighted the importance of farmers, stating that they are essential to the nation, including athletes who rely on their efforts. “It is painful to see this. All of them are citizens of this country. Farmers run the country. Nothing is possible without them, not even athletes—if they don’t feed us, we won’t be able to compete,” she remarked. She urged the government to listen to the farmers and fulfill the promises made, noting that the nation cannot progress under such circumstances.
Phogat’s visit was marked by her reception and felicitation by the farmer leaders at the Shambhu border protest site, coinciding with the 200-day milestone of the agitation. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has directed Punjab and Haryana to continue dialogues with the protesting farmers to persuade them to clear the highway. Previously, the court asked local authorities to consider opening parts of the Shambhu border highway for essential services, ambulances, and daily commuters.
In February, the Haryana government had set up barricades on the Ambala-New Delhi national highway in response to the farmers’ announcement of a march to Delhi in support of their demands. The prolonged protest at the Shambhu border continues to seek government action and fulfillments of the previously acknowledged promises.
