Congress 4th List Surprise: Raijor Dal Awarded 11 Seats
Guwahati, March 21 — The Indian National Congress on Saturday released its fourth list of candidates for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, naming nominees for seven more constituencies and formally allotting 11 seats to ally Raijor Dal after prolonged negotiations, taking the party’s total to 92 candidates so far.
The Central Election Committee cleared Bidisha Neog for Jalukbari (37), a constituency long regarded as a stronghold of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma since 2001. Neog thanked party leaders and workers on social media, saying she was honoured by the party’s trust and was determined to “lead and transform” the constituency.
Other names in the latest list include Rohit Pariga from Tangla (48), Jayanta Borah from Biswanath (70), Dr Joy Prakash Das from Naoboicha (75‑SC), Gyandip Mohan from Mahmora (94), Pran Kurmi from Titabor (102) and Rahul Roy from Hailakandi (121).
The inclusion of Dhing in Raijor Dal’s share is particularly significant; the seat had been a major sticking point in alliance talks, with both Congress and Raijor Dal reluctant to concede it. Party sources described the announcement as a breakthrough after weeks of stalled negotiations.
Alongside the 11 seats allocated to the regional party led by Akhil Gogoi, Goalpara East and Gauripur have been declared “friendly contest” seats, where both parties will field candidates. Tensions were also reported in Dalgaon, where Congress workers strongly opposed conceding the constituency to Raijor Dal.
Congress has rolled out its candidates in phases: the first list on March 3 named 42 candidates, a second list on March 14 added 23, and a third on March 19 included 22 nominees before the current fourth list. The seat-sharing agreement with Raijor Dal will be watched closely as parties finalise their electoral strategies.
