National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Daniel Langthasa formally filed his nomination for the Haflong assembly seat on Friday, March 20, accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of leaving Dima Hasao district with uneven and inadequate development and saying the region’s hill communities now demand clear change. The complaint came immediately after he submitted his papers, as the campaign season ahead of the Assam assembly elections gathered pace.
Langthasa arrived at the Haflong district commissioner’s office at around 1:00 pm accompanied by NPP national vice-president James Changma and several thousand party supporters. He submitted his nomination papers to returning officer A K Ilyas Ahmed. Speaking to reporters after the filing, Langthasa said he had entered the race “bearing the immense love and blessings of the people of Dima Hasao,” and reiterated NPP’s aim of uniting the region’s ethnic communities as part of the party’s growing national presence.
He leveled a series of allegations against the BJP government, saying development has been unequal in Dima Hasao. Langthasa claimed only five percent of the district’s population had benefited from government schemes while 95 percent remained unreached. He accused authorities of allowing contractors to go unpaid, leaving road projects half finished, pointed to an acute cooking-gas shortage, raised concerns over the absence of land security in Sixth Schedule areas, and alleged that large tracts of land had been handed to outside companies without the consent of local villagers.
If elected, Langthasa pledged to raise these grievances forcefully in the state assembly and to work continuously for the proper implementation of constitutional provisions, specifically citing Article 244(k), as well as measures to safeguard Sixth Schedule protections. On the electoral contest, he said facing BJP candidate Rupali Langthasa would “not be particularly difficult,” while adding that the presence of other contenders could make the fight more challenging.
