Empowering Voices: Persons with Disabilities Launch Inspiring Campaign for Accessibility in Chennai’s Tamil Nadu Election
In anticipation of the April 23 elections, persons with disabilities in Chennai are set to launch a campaign aimed at enhancing accessibility in local Assembly constituencies. Members of the Disability Rights Alliance, including activist Smitha Sadasivam, emphasize the need for more comprehensive demonstrations on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). “Our goal is to provide clear guidance for persons with disabilities and their supporters on how to navigate the voting process effectively,” she stated, highlighting the importance of tailored training sessions.
Sadasivam elaborated on the challenges faced by individuals with limited hand function, noting that more experiential sessions are needed. These sessions would enable participants to learn how to interact with the voting equipment properly. “For instance, individuals can practice how to reach the button, extend their hand, and apply the necessary pressure,” she explained. While the Greater Chennai Corporation typically conducts mock polling events, Sadasivam advocates for additional collaborative sessions with NGOs and special schools to enhance the learning experience.
Another key voice in the advocacy community, T.M.M. Deepak, stressed the urgency for the Election Commission to provide accessible information about candidates and their manifestos. “Understanding party platforms is vital for informed decision-making,” he said. Deepak pointed out that legal provisions and directives from the Supreme Court affirm that accessibility must extend beyond physical considerations. “If blind and deaf voters face limited access to information, simply ensuring they can physically reach polling stations isn’t enough for true inclusion,” he asserted.
Deepak also noted the importance of encompassing a broader range of disabilities beyond those specified in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act. “Disability jurisprudence has evolved to account for functional difficulties, and the Election Commission must recognize this by including individuals with non-conventional disabilities in their considerations,” he urged.
In a proactive effort to bolster electoral participation among persons with disabilities, the Chennai District Election Office is organizing an awareness campaign at Marina Beach this week. An official from the office commented, “This campaign is intended to improve electoral involvement among those with disabilities.”
