New Delhi, March 18 (IANS) — Congress MP from Assam Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the party on March 17, submitting a brief letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in which he said he felt an “overwhelming sense of sadness” as he stepped down from all posts, privileges and responsibilities. Speaking outside Parliament on March 18, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi described Bordoloi’s departure as “very unfortunate” and “truly regrettable,” saying he appeared to be upset over a ticket allocation and that she wished there had been a chance to discuss the matter.
Bordoloi’s resignation letter did not specify detailed reasons. Sources quoted in the party have pointed to growing internal dissatisfaction and shifting political alignments in Assam as background to the move. The MP had also reportedly sent a separate communication to Congress leaders expressing displeasure with the party’s functioning and with the state unit chief, Gaurav Gogoi.
The exit has drawn concern from across the opposition. Purnia MP Pappu Yadav said the party leadership is treating the resignation seriously and warned that such break-ups — which he blamed on BJP manoeuvring — can have electoral consequences even if they do not alter a party’s core ideology. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi voiced worry about repeated poaching of Congress leaders, noting that even elected representatives have been switching sides.
Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ashutosh Verma suggested two possible explanations for Bordoloi’s decision: either a perceived lack of respect within the Congress or external pressure, adding that several opposition figures have shifted towards the BJP in recent years. The Congress central leadership has not issued a public response to Bordoloi’s March 17 letter, a silence party sources say may have compounded the situation.
Bordoloi’s resignation ends a long association with the Congress and comes at a sensitive moment ahead of key state and national electoral contests. Party insiders say the top leadership will weigh the political fallout and consider measures to prevent further defections.
