Urgent Advisory: India Warns Nationals in Iran Against Border Movement

March 16, 2026 2 Min Read

India on March 16 advised its nationals in Iran not to attempt crossing any land border without prior and explicit coordination with the Indian Embassy in Tehran, warning that uncoordinated departures could lead to serious logistical and immigration problems and that consular help would not be available once individuals leave Iranian territory.

In an advisory issued on Monday, the Embassy reiterated its March 9 guidance and said, “In continuation/ reiteration of our advisory of March 9, all Indian nationals currently in Iran are strictly advised not to approach or attempt to cross any land border of Iran for onward travel without prior and explicit coordination with the Embassy of India, Tehran.”

The Embassy said it remains in regular contact with members of the Indian community in Iran and that coordinated arrangements are being made where necessary. “Uncoordinated movement toward land borders is strongly discouraged,” the advisory added.

Indian nationals who try to leave Iran via land routes without Embassy guidance are, the statement warned, “highly likely to encounter serious logistical and immigration difficulties.” The Embassy also cautioned that it “will not be in a position to provide assistance once individuals move outside Iranian territory without prior coordination.”

Separately, the Jammu & Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) said the first group of more than 70 Indian students evacuated from Iran arrived safely in Delhi on Sunday as part of the initial evacuation phase. Nasir Khuehami, JKSA national convenor, said the majority of the students were from Jammu and Kashmir and that the group included several pilgrims.

The students travelled by bus from various Iranian cities, crossed into Armenia and boarded a Flydubai flight from Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan to Dubai. From Dubai they took a connecting Flydubai flight that landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport at about 9.45 a.m. on Sunday.

Many of the returnees had been studying at institutions such as Urmia University of Medical Sciences and Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The JKSA said several students had earlier been moved to safer locations by the Indian Embassy in Tehran amid the deteriorating security situation.

The association expressed gratitude to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Embassy of India in Tehran for facilitating the complex evacuation, a development that has provided relief to worried families across Kashmir.
