Defending Thanjavur: Unleashing Flying Squads and Vigilant Surveillance Teams for a Safer Community

With the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) now in effect for the upcoming Assembly elections, Thanjavur district is stepping up its election monitoring efforts. Collector B. Priyanka Pankajam announced the formation of 72 flying squad teams (FSTs) and a corresponding number of static surveillance teams (SSTs) to ensure transparency and curb illegal distribution of cash and gifts during the electoral process.

Speaking at a press event on Monday, Collector Pankajam outlined the strategic deployment of these teams, with nine FSTs and an equal number of SSTs assigned to each of the district’s eight Assembly constituencies. These teams will operate in shifts, with three teams assigned per constituency, working around the clock to maintain vigilance. Each constituency will also have a dedicated videographing team tasked with monitoring the expenses incurred by candidates, ensuring compliance with electoral regulations.

In an effort to facilitate the voting process, the Collector clarified that individuals transporting cash up to ₹50,000 will not be required to show any documentation. Furthermore, a District Grievance Committee has been established to address concerns regarding seized cash and goods. Claimants can retrieve their possessions by presenting the necessary documentation for review, ensuring a fair process.

The district has identified 84 of its 2,496 polling booths as sensitive, prompting a coordinated response from election officials and law enforcement to mitigate any potential issues in these areas. The collaborative efforts aim to ensure a smooth electoral experience for all voters in Thanjavur.

Residents are encouraged to report any violations of the Model Code of Conduct through various channels. Complaints can be filed with the Control Room at the Collector’s Office, via the toll-free number 1800-425-9464, or through the Cvigil mobile app. Collector Pankajam emphasized that every complaint will be addressed within 100 minutes, with dedicated officers assigned to oversee the response process.

As Thanjavur prepares for the elections, the emphasis on stringent monitoring and public engagement reflects a commitment to uphold the integrity of the electoral process. The measures implemented by the district are designed to instill confidence among voters and ensure a fair playing field for all candidates.

These initiatives not only underscore the administration’s proactive approach but also align with the broader objectives of ensuring clean and transparent elections in Tamil Nadu. With the Model Code of Conduct firmly in place, Thanjavur stands poised to conduct its upcoming Assembly elections with diligence and accountability.
