Kerala Assembly Polls 2026: Congress Bets Big on Paravur with Five Consecutive Wins, CPI Aims to Steal the Spotlight!

In a recent meeting of the Central Election Committee in Kerala, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alongside party president Mallikarjun Kharge and MP KC Venugopal, strategized for the upcoming electoral showdown in Paravur, a constituency that has historically favored the Congress party. This region in Ernakulam district has a solid electoral history, with the Congress emerging victorious in ten Assembly elections, although the Communist Party of India (CPI) managed to reclaim the seat five times.

The CPI first captured Paravur in 1957 with N. Sivan Pillai, who successfully defended his title in 1982 and 1987. His son, the late P. Raju, then took the baton, winning in 1991 and 1996. Raju’s final victory came in 1996 when he edged out a young Congress candidate, V.D. Satheesan, by just 1,116 votes. However, Satheesan, who hails from Nettoor, dedicated himself to grassroots initiatives that resonated with voters, ultimately winning the constituency back for Congress in 2001 by a margin of 7,434 votes. Since then, he has maintained an impressive streak, winning the seat five consecutive times.

Satheesan’s popularity has only grown; despite the CPI’s attempts to challenge him, he consistently increased his margins. In the 2011 elections, he defeated CPI leader Pannian Raveendran by a significant 11,349 votes. His dominance continued in 2016, where he faced off against Sarada Mohan, the daughter of CPI stalwart P.K. Vasudevan Nair, and secured a remarkable 20,634-vote victory-a margin nearly double that of his 2011 win.

In 2021, even with a heightened leftist momentum, Satheesan emerged victorious again, increasing his win margin to 21,301 votes. The CPI had hoped to reverse this trend by fielding M.T. Nixon, its State committee member. However, the Congress’s influence remained strong across local governance; the party captured significant seats in eight local bodies, including the North Paravur municipality and several panchayats.

The 2021 performance from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) saw a dip as Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) candidate A.B. Jayaprakarsh placed third, receiving 12,964 votes compared to 28,097 in 2016. Congress’s triumph in the local body elections held in December 2025 further solidified its standing.

As the next election approaches, the spotlight is on Paravur and Satheesan, touted as a potential Chief Ministerial contender should the United Democratic Front secure a win. The CPI has now turned to E.T. Taison, the MLA for Kaipamangalam, in an effort to unseat him, while the NDA has begun to eye former Congress chairperson of North Paravur municipality Valsala Prasannakumar, who recently switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

With the backdrop of evolving political dynamics and fierce competition, all eyes are on Paravur as both established and new candidates gear up for a critical electoral battle. This contest is set to be a key indicator of wider sentiments across Kerala’s political landscape in the months ahead.
