Man Shot Dead by Gunmen in Manipur’s Kakching — Shocking
A 51-year-old man was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Keirak Makha Leikai, under Kakching Police Station in Kakching district, Manipur, on the night of March 13, 2026, officials said on March 14, 2026. The victim has been identified as Chingakham Malemnganba Meitei, son of Parijat Meitei, a resident of Tejpur Awang Leikai in Kakching district.
Police said a team from Kakching district, accompanied by forensic experts, reached the scene following a tip-off and recovered the body. The remains were sent for a post-mortem examination, and authorities said the motive for the killing is not yet clear and is under investigation.
So far, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Investigators are examining the scene and collecting forensic evidence as part of efforts to determine who carried out the shooting and why.
A Joint Action Committee (JAC) was formed in response to the killing and issued a strong condemnation, calling the incident an inhuman and barbaric act against an innocent citizen. Under the JAC’s aegis, a sit-in protest was held at Tejpur Primary School in Kakching/Keirak, where protesters demanded a thorough, impartial and time-bound probe.
The JAC has given authorities a deadline to identify all those involved by March 16, 2026. It also announced that neither the family nor the committee will claim the body until the culprits are identified and arrested, and warned that democratic forms of agitation would be launched if justice is delayed.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and further details will be released as they emerge.
