Congress Slams Guwahati Arrests Over Anti-Government Leaflets
Four Congress workers were arrested in Guwahati after police seized leaflets the party says were critical of the state government, triggering sharp condemnation from senior Congress leader Mira Borthakur, who called the action “unjustified” and politically motivated. The arrests took place as the materials were being brought into the city, party officials said outside Dispur Police Station.
Borthakur told reporters the seized pamphlets formed part of a “chargesheet” listing ten allegations against the BJP government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. She said the document had already been made public by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee during senior leader Priyanka Gandhi’s visit to the state and that the copies taken by police were newly printed reproductions destined for distribution.
The Congress leader argued there was no legal basis for the seizure or the detentions because election notifications have not yet been issued. According to her, the party was only trying to “take the government’s misdeeds to the people,” and the authorities acted out of fear of that message.
Borthakur further alleged the police operation reflected instructions from the Chief Minister’s office, while stressing that the party did not blame individual officers. “We have no anger against the police. They work according to the instructions given by the Chief Minister or the Home Department,” she said.
Those detained include a member of the National Students’ Union of India, a member of the Indian Youth Congress and two other Congress workers. Borthakur confirmed the party will provide full legal support to the arrested individuals.
Amid the controversy, she expressed confidence in the party’s electoral prospects, saying the Congress-led alliance would come to power in Assam within 30 days and claiming that senior Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi would become the next chief minister if the alliance wins. She also said a future Congress government would review administrative transfers within the state police.
The report contains the Congress party’s allegations and statements; it does not include a response from the state government or police. The episode highlights rising political tensions in Assam as parties ramp up campaigning and messaging ahead of the coming elections.
