Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on February 28, 2026, and briefed him on the state’s security situation as enforcement agencies step up operations against narcotics cultivation and trafficking. The governor posted about the meeting on X, but no formal readout was issued.
Sources said the discussions covered law and order, border security and ongoing anti-drug operations. Bhalla highlighted recent enforcement actions, including the destruction on February 27 of roughly 10 acres of illicit poppy cultivation at K. Bungsang in the Samulamlan subdivision, carried out in the presence of the District Executive Magistrate of Churachandpur.
Also on February 27, two men were apprehended at Imphal Airport by officers from Singjamei police station in Imphal West. The accused, identified as Suresh, 32, and Vijay Singh, 28-both residents of Madhya Pradesh-were reportedly found carrying 4.80 kg of heroin powder before boarding a flight. The suspects and the seized contraband were handed over to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Imphal Zonal Unit, and investigations are underway.
Bhalla also told the Union Home Minister about his visit to Churachandpur on February 24 to pay tribute to the late BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte. The governor laid a wreath, offered a shawl and met members of Valte’s bereaved family to convey his condolences.
Vungzagin Valte, the MLA from the Thanlon constituency, died on February 20, 2026, at a hospital in Haryana. He had been undergoing treatment for injuries suffered in a mob attack in Imphal on May 4, 2023, a day after ethnic violence erupted between Kuki‑Zo and Meitei communities in the state.
Reports say Valte’s family has refused to conduct his burial until the government accepts certain demands, including the creation of a separate district for the Zomi tribe and a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into his death. The developments underline continuing tensions in Manipur alongside intensified efforts to curb narcotics cultivation and trafficking.
