Chennai, the undeniable hub of Indian motorsports, is set to make history yet again. This weekend, the city will host India’s inaugural night street race, adding a significant milestone to its illustrious motorsports legacy. The event, organized by the Government of Tamil Nadu through the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), marks the second round of the Indian Racing Festival. Scheduled for August 31 and September 1, the race will unfold on the 3.5-km Chennai Formula Racing Circuit.
The uniquely designed circuit, which snakes around the Island Grounds, will navigate major city landmarks such as the Victory War Memorial, Napier Bridge, Swami Sivananda Salai, and Anna Salai in an anti-clockwise direction. Adjacent to the bustling Marina Beach, the circuit is abuzz with final preparations. Catch-fences and barriers are already in place, while spectator grandstands are nearing completion, adorned in the colors of the national flag.
Key locations for spectator stands include Anna Salai near Muthuswami Bridge and four stands along Sivananda Salai. Additionally, the Island Grounds will feature three exclusive lounges.
Saturday will be dedicated to free practice and qualifying sessions for the Indian Racing League (IRL), F4 Indian Championship, and JK Formula LGB 4 categories. The main racing event kicks off at 4:05 p.m. on Sunday, featuring two races each for the JK FLGB 4, F4, and IRL categories. Timed to last 25 minutes plus one lap, the F4 and IRL races promise to be thrilling spectacles.
With meticulous planning and a unique course through Chennai’s iconic streets, this night race is poised to be a landmark event in India’s motorsports calendar.
