Justice Prevails: Tamil Nadu Astrologer Sentenced to 200 Years for Horrific Sexual Assault on Minor Girls
In a landmark decision, the Sivaganga POCSO Court has sentenced a 51-year-old astrologer, Ramakrishnan, to an astonishing 200 years of rigorous imprisonment for the sexual assault of two minor girls. The case, which dates back to November 2021, has drawn significant attention and raises pressing concerns about the exploitation of vulnerable individuals under the guise of spiritual guidance.
Ramakrishnan, a resident of Managiri in Sivaganga district, was approached by a woman seeking help for her two daughters, aged 17 and 14, who were struggling academically. He promised that a specific ritual would enhance their studies. Trusting in his claims, the mother brought her daughters to his home, where he instructed her to wait in one room while he took the girls to another for the supposed ritual. It was during this time that he sexually assaulted them, threatening that dire consequences would await their family if they revealed his actions.
The trauma remained hidden until two years later when both girls fell ill, leading to a diagnosis of a sexually transmitted disease (STD). This shocking revelation prompted them to disclose the abuse during subsequent medical evaluations. Following their disclosures, the girls’ mother filed a complaint, prompting the Tiruppattur All-Women Police to initiate an investigation, ultimately resulting in Ramakrishnan’s arrest under the POCSO Act.
Judge Gokulmurugan presided over the trial at the Sivaganga POCSO Court, where he delivered a strong message against such crimes by imposing a cumulative sentence of 200 years-100 years for each victim-along with a fine of ₹2 lakh. Additionally, the court mandated that the government provide ₹10 lakh in compensation to each girl, highlighting the need for support for survivors of such heinous acts.
This ruling marks a significant moment in judicial history, as it is believed to be the first instance of a court awarding a combined 200-year sentence for offenses under the POCSO Act. Ramakrishnan has been incarcerated in Madurai Central Jail since his arrest in 2022.
The case underscores the importance of vigilance in protecting minors and the need for strict enforcement of laws intended to safeguard children from sexual abuse. It serves as a critical reminder of the role that community awareness and prompt legal action play in addressing and preventing such violations.
As this case continues to resonate within the Tamil Nadu community, it calls for a collective commitment to change societal attitudes towards such crimes and reinforces the significance of supporting victims in their journey toward recovery and justice.
This case is not only a pivotal moment in Tamil Nadu’s legal landscape but also a wake-up call to society about the potential exploitation of trust placed in authority figures, including those posing as spiritual guides.
