Nagaland Students Condemn Racial Attack on Naga Doctor at AIIMS
The Nagaland Medical Students’ Association (NMSA) has strongly condemned an alleged incident of racial discrimination and sexual assault against a Naga doctor who is a third-year postgraduate resident in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Gorakhpur. In a press release issued on February 24, the association said the attack reportedly took place on the evening of February 23, around 8:00 pm, while the doctor was returning to campus and was followed for more than 1.5 kilometres by three individuals. Police have arrested two of the three accused, the statement said, while one alleged perpetrator remains at large.
According to NMSA’s account, the accused hurled obscene remarks and racial slurs targeting the doctor’s North Eastern identity. Near Gate No. 2 of the institute, one of the men allegedly removed his shirt in an act of intimidation and another reportedly touched the doctor inappropriately. The victim raised an alarm, after which the suspects fled the scene.
The association said the doctor suffered severe physical and emotional trauma and described the episode as “profoundly disturbing and wholly unacceptable.” NMSA added it felt “deepest anguish and unequivocal condemnation” at the incident and called for accountability under the law.
NMSA warned the case reflects a broader and troubling pattern of racial discrimination, harassment and violence faced by people from the North East across the country. It reiterated a position of zero tolerance toward crimes involving racial discrimination and sexual assault and demanded strict punishment for those found responsible.
Expressing concern that one accused remains unapprehended, the association warned that delays in arresting all suspects could hinder justice and further traumatise the victim. NMSA appealed to the Government of Nagaland to take up the matter with the Government of Uttar Pradesh and relevant central authorities to ensure coordinated, time-bound action, and called for legal, institutional and moral support to enable the victim to pursue justice without fear or procedural hardship.
Reaffirming solidarity with the victim and with North Eastern communities facing discrimination, NMSA urged authorities to act with urgency and ensure swift and exemplary justice in the case.
