Assam Grants Rs 5 Lakh Ex Gratia to Digboi Lynching Victim’s Family
The Assam government has sanctioned an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the family of Bodheshwar Garh, who was allegedly lynched on February 12 at Digboi Charali Market after a rumour of fish theft. Digboi BJP legislator Suren Phukan handed the relief cheque to Garh’s wife on Friday, February 20.
The attack, which local reports say was triggered by a circulating rumour, led to a mob assault at the market. Law enforcement agencies have since arrested six persons accused of involvement in the assault; they are being prosecuted under the relevant legal provisions.
Suren Phukan said, “The guilty must face the law, and the victim’s family should receive support.” He had pressed the matter with the Digboi Co‑District Administration and the Tinsukia District Administration and raised it during an Assembly session, urging both legal accountability and immediate financial relief for the bereaved family.
Before the government’s formal sanction, Phukan provided Rs 60,000 to the family as immediate assistance. According to officials, the ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh was approved within eight days of the incident and was made in the name of the victim’s wife.
Bogapani GP President Philip Kandulna, who coordinated between the family and the MLA, said continuous follow‑up and proactive local efforts helped secure the quick approval and delivery of the assistance. The combination of arrests and financial aid aims to support the family while investigations continue, and the Charali incident underscores the need for prompt legal action in cases of mob violence.
