Kamrup Admin Shuts Down Two Illegal Brick Kilns in Boko During Drive
Boko, Feb 17 — The Kamrup district administration on Tuesday sealed two chimney brick kilns under the Chamaria Revenue Circle after finding them operating without mandatory clearances from the Pollution Control Board. The action, carried out during a special drive, targeted the PKB and NKB kilns for continuing operations without submitting required documents.
The operation was led by Circle Officer Nandan Nilutpal Bhagawati on directives from the district authority. Officials discovered that both units had ignored earlier orders and subsequently sealed the sites to stop further activity.
In the first week of January, the district administration had given all brick kilns in the circle seven days to furnish copies of pollution-control and other necessary permits. PKB and NKB failed to comply within the stipulated period and were identified during the enforcement sweep.
Speaking to the press, Circle Officer Bhagawati said, “The kilns will remain sealed until they submit the necessary documents.” He confirmed that new construction and kiln operations at the sites have been halted and that legal action will follow against the violators.
The raid raises questions about how these kilns managed to operate for an extended period without the required clearances. Local reports indicate that several unauthorized brick kilns have mushroomed across the Boko–Chaygaon co-district, allegedly flouting environmental and regulatory norms.
The district report also notes a conspicuous silence from the forest department, police, and the revenue circles of Boko, Chamaria and Nagarbera in curbing such illegal ventures, an omission that local authorities will need to address as investigations and enforcement proceed.
