Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has issued a clarification after allegations emerged that a patient was left untreated inside an ambulance for several hours. Dr. Devajit Choudhury, the hospital superintendent, said the patient, identified as Pranab Bora, arrived at GMCH’s CN Casualty at 4:49 a.m. after being referred from Tezpur Medical College and Hospital around 10:00 p.m. the previous night.

Dr. Choudhury said Bora, who is reported to be suffering from quadriparesis — partial weakness in all four limbs — was examined by the neurosurgery team immediately upon arrival. At that time, however, there were no vacant beds available in the relevant unit.

According to the superintendent, once a bed became available in the hospital’s old building, Unit 7, Bora was transferred and admitted to bed number 31. Dr. Choudhury added that Bora’s companion, Pranjal Bora, was present during the clarification.

The hospital acknowledged a disagreement between the patient’s relatives and on-duty doctors but described it as a misunderstanding. Dr. Choudhury said the situation was triggered in part by a new attendant repeatedly asking the same question, which escalated tensions; he confirmed the issue has since been resolved amicably.

Dr. Choudhury also noted that GMCH receives a large number of daily referrals from other hospitals, and heavy inflow can make immediate bed allocation challenging. The hospital’s statement frames the incident as an operational strain rather than deliberate neglect, while underscoring the pressure on tertiary-care facilities during periods of high patient load.
