Will PM Modi Embrace Unity at Tarique Rahman’s Historic Swearing-In as Bangladesh PM? Here’s the Inside Scoop!

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is considering inviting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other regional leaders to the swearing-in ceremony of its leader, Tarique Rahman, following a decisive victory in the recent national elections. Rahman is expected to take office as Bangladesh’s prime minister next week. Humayun Kabir, a foreign policy advisor to Rahman, shared with WION that inviting PM Modi could symbolize a potential thaw in the historically strained relations between the neighboring nations. “The region is important to us,” Kabir noted, highlighting that strengthening regional ties is a key aspect of Rahman’s foreign policy.

While there is no official confirmation yet from the Indian or Bangladeshi governments regarding Modi’s attendance, Kabir characterized the invitation as a goodwill gesture aimed at improving bilateral relations. “You give an invitation for people to attend; you will have expectations that you attend,” he said, emphasizing the importance of rekindling diplomatic connections. If the invitation is formally extended and accepted, Modi’s presence would represent a significant moment in India-Bangladesh relations under a new political leadership in Dhaka.

Prime Minister Modi has already shown interest in engaging with the new government, having congratulated Rahman in a post on X (formerly Twitter) and expressing a desire to “strengthen our multifaceted relations.” Following their initial interactions, Modi’s call to Rahman was described as cordial, indicating a willingness to reset the diplomatic tone.

The exact date for the oath ceremony has yet to be officially announced, although Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary to the Chief Adviser, stated that it will occur soon, likely by Monday or Tuesday. Preparations are reportedly well underway, and details regarding who will administer the oath are still being finalized.

Historically, India maintained a friendly relationship with Bangladesh during the fifteen years of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government. However, ties soured following the ouster of the Hasina-led regime in August 2024, particularly due to violence against minority communities. Kabir articulated that Tarique Rahman seeks to reset relations with India, emphasizing that the responsibility lies with both governments to change their perspectives. “The resounding victory given to the BNP by the people of Bangladesh points towards that direction,” he asserted.

Reacting to Modi’s congratulatory message, the BNP expressed gratitude, acknowledging the recognition of Rahman’s leadership. In a post on X, the party stated, “Thank you very much, Honourable @narendramodi. We greatly appreciate your acknowledgment of Mr. Tarique Rahman’s leadership in securing the BNP’s decisive win.” The party reaffirmed its commitment to democratic governance and collaboration with India, pledging to advance mutual prospects focused on peace and development in the region.

Modi had emphasized the significance of democracy and inclusivity in Bangladesh, stating, “India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.” His message followed the party’s sweep in the parliamentary elections, marking a pivotal shift in Bangladesh’s political landscape. The BNP won a substantial majority in the 300-seat parliament, positioning Rahman as prime minister-designate while facing opposition from the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami alliance. With voter turnout at approximately 59%, this election not only catalyzed political change but also sparked hope for a renewed democratic process in the country.
