Akhil Gogoi, president of Raijor Dal and MLA from Sivasagar, has urged the Congress to fast-track alliance talks ahead of the Assam Assembly polls and to hand over lead negotiator responsibilities to former APCC chief Bhupen Kumar Borah. Gogoi made the appeal as parties prepare for intensified seat-sharing discussions during the assembly session scheduled for February 16–19, 2026.
Speaking to reporters, Gogoi said APCC president Gaurav Gogoi had informed him via WhatsApp that the Assembly session would run from February 16 to 19, 2026, and that alliance deliberations are expected to feature during that period. He signalled urgency, saying Raijor Dal wants a binding framework agreed without delay.
“We want the alliance to be finalised at the earliest,” Gogoi said, stressing Raijor Dal’s commitment to opposition unity and noting that his party has consistently backed forces aligned against the ruling dispensation. He emphasised the need for swift clarity on seat-sharing to prevent last-minute disputes.
Gogoi recalled the earlier phase of coordination under Bhupen Borah’s leadership, saying the Opposition Oikyo Moncho functioned cohesively when Borah was APCC president. “There was mutual understanding, dialogue and cooperation among all of us,” he said, pointing to past consensus-building as a model to replicate.
Arguing that Borah’s experience and political judgment make him the best candidate to steer talks, Gogoi said, “He understands where Congress is strong and where Raijor Dal can perform better. If given the responsibility, we can sit together for a day and arrive at a final decision.” He described Borah’s earlier role in uniting opposition leaders as a “practical and correct decision” and urged Congress to re-empower him to negotiate the alliance structure.
The appeal underscores renewed efforts by opposition parties in Assam to consolidate strategy ahead of the polls, with alliance arithmetic expected to play a decisive role in the coming weeks.
