The Mumbai Crime Branch says it has traced the sender of a threatening WhatsApp voice note that demanded Rs 1 crore from actor Ranveer Singh to a man reportedly identified as Harry Boxer, a close associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, officials said. The preliminary probe found the voice on the message matches Boxer’s, though investigators have sent the clip for forensic examination and are awaiting the report.
According to police, the extortion voice note was delivered to Ranveer Singh’s manager after a separate firing incident outside filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s residence. The message combined monetary demands with threats, prompting the actor’s team to increase his security measures. The manager’s statement was recorded by the Crime Branch three days ago, and the investigation is continuing.
Investigators say the message was sent via a VPN, and initial tracing points to a foreign location. The Mumbai Police have sought Interpol’s assistance to identify the VPN’s country of origin and to track the source more precisely. Officials are examining call and metadata alongside other evidence to build the case.
The Crime Branch has also recorded statements in related matters, including from the manager of actor Aayush Sharma and from the brother-in-law of superstar Salman Khan. Investigations into these complaints are ongoing, and a formal FIR is expected to be registered soon, police said.
No arrests have been announced so far. Authorities emphasized that the identification is based on preliminary forensic and investigative work and that further corroboration is pending.
On the professional front, Ranveer Singh is set to appear in the sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge, slated to release on March 19. The film-starring R.
