Crystal Dynamics has announced Legacy of Kain: Ascendance, the franchise’s first wholly new game in more than two decades, and set a firm release date: March 31, 2026. The studio says Ascendance will arrive on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, Xbox platforms, and PC via Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store.
Ascendance shifts the series’ usual approach into a retro pixel sidescroller platformer — a 2D, side-scrolling action game focused on movement and jumping across levels — while retaining classic Legacy of Kain characters and lore. Players will alternate roughly equally among four playable protagonists: Kain, two distinct forms of Raziel (his vampire form and a human Sarafan leader form), and Elaleth, a character previously seen only in the series’ graphic novels.
Visually, the game mixes pixel art with hand-drawn, anime-style cinematics and intermittent sections that deliberately evoke the PS1-era 3D look of the original titles. Electronic rock artist Celldweller is composing the score; he previously recorded the companion soundtrack for the graphic novel Soul Reaver: The Dead Shall Rise. Crystal Dynamics also confirmed that the original voice actors for Kain, Raziel, Ariel and Moebius will return to their roles.
Alongside Ascendance, Crystal Dynamics announced a remaster of Legacy of Kain: Defiance. The studio says the remaster’s Deluxe Edition will include a playable demo of a never-before-released, cancelled entry in the series — the rumored Legacy of Kain 6, reportedly titled The Dark Prophecy.
The revival represents a notable tonal shift for the franchise: a deliberate blend of nostalgia and new direction that aims to reconnect longtime fans with familiar voices and story beats while experimenting with retro presentation and varied gameplay.
