Unlocking Salem’s Secrets: The Powerful Voting Patterns Ahead of TVK Chief Vijay’s Inspiring Visit
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay is set to visit Salem on February 13, 2026. As the political landscape heats up, an analysis of the key players in this district reveals intriguing dynamics. Traditionally a bastion for the All India Anna Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Salem supported the AIADMK in 10 out of 11 Assembly constituencies during the 2016 and 2021 elections, with the exception of Salem (North).
In the 2016 election, the AIADMK ran independently, but by 2021 it allied with the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, the 2024 Lok Sabha election marked a decline in the AIADMK’s influence, as it partnered solely with the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) while the PMK joined a BJP-led coalition. This shift resulted in the AIADMK only leading in two Assembly segments, while the DMK overcame it in nine.
Examining the average vote share highlights this trend: in 2021, the AIADMK-led coalition garnered 50.34%, compared to the DMK’s 39.34%. Fast forward to 2024, and those figures shifted to approximately 37.3% for the AIADMK and 42.5% for the DMK, with the BJP-led coalition capturing 10.8%. With the return of the BJP and PMK into the AIADMK’s ranks, the party appears to regain a strategic advantage. Yet, the ruling DMK and its allies are poised to safeguard the lead they achieved two years earlier.
S. Semmalai, a seasoned politician and four-time MLA from Salem, emphasizes that the real competition lies between the established Dravidian parties, asserting, “We do not view him [Mr. Vijay] or his party as a force to reckon with.” He expresses confidence in the revitalized alliances within the AIADMK, suggesting that they are positioned to reclaim their prominence.
Data from the 2021 and 2024 elections show that the two primary parties accounted for approximately 80% of the vote share in both cycles; their combined share was a striking 89% in the 2021 Assembly polls. A DMK representative in the district argues that the possibility of a third-party emergence, including the TVK, is virtually nonexistent. Despite this, TVK leaders assert they have a connection to every family in Salem through their voter outreach.
