Congress Slams State Government for Damaging Assam’s Peace: Outrage Over Failing Law and Order
In Guwahati, the Congress party has criticized the Assam state government for its alleged failure to maintain law and order, resulting in a turbulent and unstable environment. Bhupen Borah, the President of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), noted the tense atmosphere in Assam following threats from certain groups to evict migrant Muslims in response to the recent rape of a minor in the Nagaon district.
Borah accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP-led Assam government of employing divisive tactics to regain trust, especially in Upper Assam, where the BJP performed poorly in the recent Lok Sabha elections. He claimed that the BJP’s base in Upper Assam has been significantly shaken, which could severely impact the party’s prospects in the upcoming 2026 assembly elections. Borah further alleged that Sarma is attempting to create a new narrative in Upper Assam and incite communal conflict.
In related news, Assam Police have arrested one of the three suspects in the gang rape case, with CM Sarma describing the assault as an attack on indigenous Assamese people. Additionally, Sarma stated that no Hindus have entered India from Bangladesh despite recent turmoil, although 35 Muslims were detained for attempting to enter Bangalore, Tamil Nadu, and Coimbatore for work.
These developments highlight the rising tensions and complexities surrounding the migrant issue in Assam and the political maneuvers ahead of crucial electoral battles.
