Roblox Corp. saw its stock soar by 20% in after-hours trading on Thursday following the release of its fourth fiscal quarter results, which outperformed analyst expectations. The company, headquartered in San Mateo, California, reported a loss per share of 45 cents, slightly better than the anticipated loss of 48 cents. Additionally, Roblox’s bookings for the quarter reached $2.22 billion, surpassing the forecast of $2.05 billion.
Looking ahead, Roblox estimates first-quarter bookings will range between $1.69 billion and $1.74 billion, exceeding Wall Street’s forecast of $1.68 billion. This strong performance is highlighted by a remarkable 63% increase in fourth-quarter bookings compared to the same period last year. However, the company also reported a net loss of $316 million for the quarter, a significant rise from the $220 million loss reported a year earlier.
The gaming platform showed substantial growth in its user base, announcing 144 million average daily active users (DAUs) for the fourth quarter, a staggering 69% increase year-over-year. Analysts had initially projected 138 million DAUs. In a strategic shift, Roblox informed shareholders that it will discontinue its annual guidance starting in 2027, citing “inherent variability” in its business. Instead, it plans to focus on quarterly guidance to better reflect ongoing developments.
Despite its success, Roblox has faced scrutiny regarding the safety of its young users. The company is currently addressing multiple lawsuits concerning the exploitation of children on its platform. To enhance user safety, Roblox implemented a mandatory age verification process for users wishing to access communication features in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands late in the fourth quarter. According to Roblox, 60% of daily users in these regions have completed the age check, while the global average stands at 45%.
While the age verification rollout, completed globally in January, has resulted in a “mid-single-digit headwind” for engagement and a “low-single-digit headwind” for bookings growth, Roblox maintains that the long-term benefits are substantial. “Accurate age data unlocks a long-term opportunity to tailor features and content, increasing safety and civility, which in turn drives organic engagement growth,” the company stated.
Roblox has discovered that the age verification process has shifted its understanding of its user demographics. Among daily users, 38% are between 13 and 17 years old, 35% are under 13, and 27% are over 18. Roblox views its large young user base as a “valuable strategic asset,” emphasizing its commitment to evolving in a way that prioritizes the safety and engagement of its community.
