Aizawl: Mizoram’s opposition Congress Party has called on the Val Upa Council (Senior Bachelors’ Council), a key decision-making body of the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), to investigate alleged discrepancies surrounding land acquisition by the Indian Air Force (IAF) near Lengpui Airport. The Congress claims that this transaction involved illegal land sales and the payment of “exorbitant compensation” to middlemen, pointing to a potentially significant corruption scandal within the current ZPM administration.
In a statement, the Congress highlighted that the ZPM, prior to taking office, had asserted the importance of the Val Upa Council as a body responsible for ensuring the government remained accountable. The council was said to have the authority to reprimand leaders and even remove those deemed unfit for office. The party noted that the council had committed to fighting corruption and proactively overseeing government officials as dictated by the ZPM’s constitution.
Despite these pledges, the Congress argued that there has been a noticeable lack of intervention from the council regarding the Lengpui situation. They further alleged that though the former Mizo National Front (MNF) government initially approved the land purchase, the finalization of the sale occurred under the current ZPM leadership.
The Congress urged both the MNF and ZPM to apologize to the public for “harming the people’s interests” and to rectify the controversial transaction, asserting that neither political party is blameless. They also raised concerns about the integrity of the Val Upa Council members, questioning their reputation for being “upright and honorable.”
“If they truly have authority, they must not remain passive in the face of this egregious wrongdoing,” the party stated. Additionally, they called for a thorough investigation and pressed the council to exercise its powers to dismiss any parties involved in bribery or illegal middleman payments, regardless of their rank.
