Revolutionizing Politics: Key Opposition Leaders Join SKM Movement
Several leaders from the opposition parties SDF and CAP Sikkim, along with hundreds of their supporters, joined the ruling SKM party on Wednesday. This significant move took place during the SKM’s 14th foundation day celebrations, where they were warmly welcomed by party president and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay.
Notable figures who switched allegiance included former SDF ministers, ex-MLAs, and various office-bearers such as Hissay Lachungpa, Sonam Gyatso Lepcha, Tshering Wangdi Lepcha, Bek Bahadur Rai, Norzang Lepcha, Rikzing Norbu Dorjee Bhutia, and candidates preparing for the 2024 elections. From CAP Sikkim, former minister Dawchoo Lepcha and former president L.P. Kafley were among those who joined, along with additional candidates and functionaries.
In addressing the gathering, the new members of SKM expressed that their decision was influenced by the comprehensive development initiatives undertaken by the SKM party, the State government, and Chief Minister Tamang-Golay. They commended the policies and programs implemented by the ruling party, highlighting their positive impact on the welfare, upliftment, and overall development of the State and its residents. The leaders noted they joined the SKM with no preconditions, aiming solely to support the leadership and fortify the party.
During his address, Chief Minister Golay welcomed the newcomers, emphasizing the SKM’s commitment to inclusive politics. “Our ideology is inclusive politics, and we want to take everyone along in the development process. Converting our enemies into friends is our character,” he stated. He reassured SKM workers that the induction of opposition leaders should not be seen as a threat, adding, “I will not let your contributions go to waste. The party and I are always there for you. Those who joined us today have come to support and serve our party, not to take away your share or rights.”
In a subsequent social media post, the Chief Minister warmly welcomed the SDF and CAP leaders who decided to join the SKM, stating that their choice reflects confidence in a shared vision and a commitment to constructive governance and development in the State. Golay recognized the diverse experiences and perspectives the new members bring, expressing confidence that their participation will enhance collective efforts in policy formulation and public service. He concluded with a call for unity in progress, respecting each other’s contributions while aiming for the stability and advancement of Sikkim.
