Ikea’s New Matter Smart Home Devices Facing Frustrating Connection Woes: Discover How to Fix It!
In recent weeks, many consumers have faced significant hurdles while attempting to connect Ikea’s new Matter-over-Thread smart home devices. This highly anticipated range includes programmable buttons, smart bulbs, plugs, and temperature and motion sensors, all designed to integrate seamlessly with any smart home platform-starting at just $6. However, despite the promising features, users have reported a variety of setup challenges, leading to widespread frustration across forums and social media.
The disparity in connection success is not isolated. While some users have managed to set up their devices without issue, others have hit brick walls, echoing similar complaints. Posts on the Tradfri subreddit reveal that customers share a common struggle in getting these new devices to connect. Even reviews on Ikea’s own website cite ongoing pairing difficulties, and reports from colleagues at The Verge confirm these challenges. Of the six devices I attempted to connect, only one-a Kajplats smart lightbulb-successfully paired with Apple Home after seven tries. Meanwhile, an Alpstuga IAQ monitor connected to Home Assistant only after failing to sync with Apple Home first.
A Bilresa smart button briefly connected to Amazon Alexa before dropping off the network, refusing to re-pair. The Timmerflotte temperature sensor and Myggspray motion sensor wouldn’t connect to anything, including Ikea’s own Dirigera hub. “We are aware that some customers are experiencing connection issues when setting up their devices in certain home environments, and we take that very seriously,” stated David Granath, range manager for smart home at Ikea.
Despite some users finding success, the volume of complaints regarding initial connectivity and ongoing performance issues raises a flag about the overall reliability of these devices. One user notably pointed out that of the 60 Bilresa buttons they attempted to pair, only 31 succeeded, resulting in a 52% success rate. Others have reported struggling to maintain device connections even after successful pairing. For instance, while using the Bilresa button with Amazon Alexa, David Pierce of The Verge experienced similar problems, and several users on the Tradfri subreddit echoed issues with for the Kajplats lightbulbs.
Ikea’s latest offerings are the first to utilize Matter-over-Thread technology, moving away from the Zigbee protocol used in previous Tradfri products. The Matter standard was designed to facilitate effortless cross-platform connectivity among major ecosystems such as Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa-all without the need for Ikea’s Dirigera hub or cloud access.
In response to the mounting concerns, Granath revealed that Ikea is actively investigating these issues. “The launch of our Matter range has been highly anticipated, and for most customers the products work seamlessly, as intended,” he continued, emphasizing that a dedicated team is assessing user feedback and collaborating with ecosystem partners for improvements.
While technology launch delays are common, Ikea’s latest challenges illustrate the complex realities of smart home integration. The considerable variety of user network setups complicates matters, and only real-world testing reveals underlying issues. As the rollout of Matter devices continues, determining whether the problems stem from Ikea’s implementation of Matter, device compatibility with platforms, or the Matter specifications themselves will be crucial.
