Nagaland Govt Offers Rs 2 Lakh Ex Gratia to Kohima Bus Crash Victims
Kohima, Feb 2: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in a tragic bus accident in Kohima district two days ago. The Chief Minister extended his condolences and also stated that Rs 50,000 would be disbursed to each person seriously injured in the incident, wishing them a speedy recovery.
The accident occurred on Saturday evening when a bus carrying 32 passengers overturned approximately 21 km from Kohima, the capital of Nagaland. Official reports confirmed that five women from the Chumoukedima Ao Baptist Church lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries. The bus was reportedly returning from Mokokchung to Chümoukedima when the accident took place between 10th Mile and Peducha on the night of January 31.
Preliminary investigations have ruled out reckless or drunken driving, with officials suggesting a “likely mechanical failure” as the cause of the accident. A detailed technical examination is currently underway to ascertain the exact circumstances behind the incident.
Following legal procedures, the bodies of the deceased women have been handed over to their families. Meanwhile, the injured passengers have been transported to the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research in Dimapur for medical treatment.
