More than 200,000 Adivasis from Assam, the Northeast, and other regions of India gathered in Bargolai, Tinsukia district, on February 1 to witness the conclusion of the 21st Adivasi Mahasabha. This event emerged as one of the largest tribal gatherings in recent years. The four-day Mahasabha took place at the Dehing-Patkai Sports Project Playground, under the 83 Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency, attracting an unprecedented turnout and highlighting long-standing demands of the Adivasi community.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who was the chief guest at the event, delivered a pointed critique of the central government, labeling it a “trader government.” He emphasized that while the Adivasi community forms the backbone of Assam’s tea industry and significantly contributes to the state’s economy, they remain deprived of their fundamental rights. Soren voiced concerns over land alienation, a lack of educational opportunities, and insufficient political recognition, asserting that a sustained collective struggle is essential for achieving justice. “If the struggle continues, rights will surely be secured,” he urged the community to maintain unity and determination.
The concluding session began with a welcome address by Rana Jyoti Neog, President of the Reception Committee. Leaders from the All Adivasi Student Association of Assam (AASAA) also took prominent roles, with Central Executive Committee President Rejan Hor and General Secretary Deben Uraon advocating for greater unity and a stronger movement to protect Adivasi rights.
Numerous influential leaders from Jharkhand attended the Mahasabha, including Cabinet Minister Chamra Linda, Rajya Sabha MP Bijay Kumar Hasda, and MLA M T Raju, highlighting the growing political importance of the event.
In addition to political discussions, the final day featured a vibrant celebration of Adivasi culture, showcasing traditional dances, folk songs, and cultural performances that created a festive yet assertive ambiance. The 21st Adivasi Mahasabha once again elevated the issues of the Adivasi society, sending a resolute political message about identity, rights, and representation from the heart of Assam.
