Temp See-Saw Sparks Viral Fury: How Sudden Weather Changes Trigger Cough and Cold Epidemics in Kolkata
Kolkata is grappling with a significant cough and cold outbreak, as fluctuating temperatures have unleashed a wave of respiratory infections among residents. Over the past week, minimum temperatures have hovered between 13°C and 15°C, creating a setting ripe for the rapid spread of illness. Patients are presenting with symptoms including persistent coughs, chest congestion, and low-grade fever, raising concerns among medical professionals about the ongoing impact of these viruses.
According to Dr. Soumya Sengupta, head of pulmonology at Charnock Hospital, the respiratory unit is facing high occupancy due to a surge of cases at the outpatient department. The erratic temperature changes have led many people to shed winter layers, leaving them vulnerable to infections. “The sudden increase in temperature has resulted in a significant number of patients experiencing severe cough and cold symptoms, necessitating some to seek hospitalization,” Dr. Sengupta noted. He also highlighted that individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma are particularly at risk, especially as pollution levels remain elevated despite the warmer temperatures.
Dr. Sauren Panja, an intensivist at the RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences, elaborated on the types of viruses causing these conditions. He identified rhinovirus, metapneumovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus as prevalent culprits that become active with each fluctuation in temperature. “These viruses lead to upper respiratory tract infections, often causing cough and fever. The inflammation of the airway passage, known as laryngopharyngitis, can also induce voice loss or hoarseness,” Panja explained.
Further compounding the issue, Dr. Sayan Chakrabarty, an infectious diseases specialist at Manipal Hospital, warned of a potential spike in pulmonary diseases. “We’ve encountered a rise in cases of haemophilus pneumonia, some of which have been severe enough to require ICU admission. Streptococcus pneumoniae is also on the rise, and this trend could continue as long as temperature variations persist,” he stated.
The situation is exacerbated for patients with pre-existing lung conditions. Dr. Bhaskar Narayan Chowdhury, chief microbiologist at Peerless Hospital, noted that allergens mixed with pollutants are worsening symptoms for these individuals. “Currently, we’re seeing a resurgence in viruses such as metapneumovirus and rhinovirus, as well as bacteria that can trigger pneumonia. We’ve even treated a patient with swine flu and several non-COVID coronavirus cases,” Chowdhury reported.
Children are not spared in this outbreak, though most cases appear to be moderate and recovery is quick. Pediatrician Dr. Shantanu Ray indicated that younger children and teenagers, who spend more time outdoors, are particularly susceptible. “The symptoms mimic those seen in adults, largely due to upper respiratory tract infections. As pollution continues to rise, we anticipate more cases over the coming weeks,” Ray warned.
Healthcare professionals recommend against self-medicating with antibiotics unless prescribed. Instead, they advise using anti-allergic medications, symptomatic treatments, and simple home remedies like gargling to alleviate symptoms.
As Kolkata navigates this health crisis, residents are urged to remain vigilant, maintain proper hygiene, and consult with healthcare providers for guidance on managing these respiratory infections.
