Three Workers Arrested: Shocking Murder of Carpenter in Dentam
A 27-year-old carpenter was found dead in his rented room on Friday evening in Dentam, West Sikkim, following a violent dispute over unpaid wages. Three carpenters, all workers for the deceased, were promptly arrested by Gyalshing district police. The victim, identified as Rajib Mandal from Ramganj in Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal, had been staying in Dentam Tar, Middle Shankhu, for work.
Mandal was a carpentry contractor supervising several workers from West Bengal. According to police, the incident unfolded on January 23 around 7 PM when he was discovered lying in a pool of blood in his room. Earlier that evening, Mandal had been drinking and dining with four carpenters who worked under him.
At approximately 6 PM, a heated argument broke out over delayed payments for work completed at two construction sites. This verbal altercation escalated into a physical confrontation, during which one worker struck Mandal on the head and other parts of his body, resulting in fatal injuries.
Reports indicate that a 17-year-old carpenter fled from the scene out of fear. Upon exiting the room, the accused urged him to escape with them, claiming they would be killed by Mandal if they stayed. However, subsequent investigations cleared the juvenile of any involvement in the crime, and he has since been released to his caretaker.
A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged by local Panchayat member Prakash Subba, leading to the registration of case FIR No. 01/2026 at Dental Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The arrested suspects include Suman Mandal (24), Prangopal Mandal (42), and Bubai Adhikary (20), all from Hatiyadanga, West Bengal. All three had been residing in Dentam for 13 days prior to the incident.
In response to the murder, authorities issued an alert for four additional absconding suspects. Acting on this alert, police intercepted the fleeing individuals at Legshep while they were trying to escape after hiring a vehicle from Gyalshing. Gyalshing Superintendent of Police Tshering Sherpa commended the swift and professional actions of the involved personnel, highlighting their effective coordination and promising rewards for their exemplary performance.
Investigations are ongoing as police work to formalize legal procedures and gather additional evidence.
