Nagaland Celebrates Tizu–Zungki’s New Status as National Waterway-101!
Nagaland’s Minister K G Kenye expressed his approval on January 23 regarding the Indian government’s announcement to designate the Tizu-Zungki river as National Waterway-101. He described this decision as a pivotal move toward enhancing inland water transport and regional connectivity within Nagaland. Kenye’s comments came during the third meeting of the Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) in Kochi, Kerala, where he thanked the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, as well as the Inland Waterways Authority of India, for their initiative. He underscored that this declaration would pave the way for new transportation opportunities and spur economic growth in the state.
Kenye emphasized that Nagaland’s proximity to the India-Myanmar border presents unique prospects for increasing cross-border trade and strengthening connectivity with Southeast Asian nations. He urged the Inland Waterways Authority of India to execute the project earnestly, highlighting its potential benefits for local economies. The minister pointed out the importance of developing a seamless and cost-effective transportation system, with inland waterways playing a crucial role in enhancing connectivity among Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. He believes this would not only promote regional economic development but also support local industries.
During the IWDC meeting, Kenye proposed extending inland waterways from Lakhimpur in Assam to Nagaland via the Barak river to further integrate the state into the national waterways system. He also disclosed that he has formally approached the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, advocating for the comprehensive development of water bodies in Nagaland. Accompanying Kenye at the meeting were Robert Longchar, the Commissioner and Secretary of Transport, and Thomas Y. Kutsamrong, the Deputy General Manager of Nagaland State Transport.
