Chennai Students Create Sweet History: 4,008-Strong Ice Cream Licking Chain Breaks Guinness World Record!
C Sathyan, Vice Chairman of Hatsun Agro Product, was recently awarded a Guinness World Record for the longest chain of people licking ice cream. This record-breaking event took place in Chennai, where an impressive 4,008 school students participated, making it a historic moment for the city. The record was set at the RK Convention Centre in Neelankarai on January 21, surpassing the previous record of 2,728 participants established in July 2011 by the UK’s Morelli’s ice cream brand.
The rules for claiming the record were straightforward: participants needed to form a human chain, each holding an ice cream in their right hand and passing it to their neighbor, all within one minute. Excitement and anticipation filled the air as students faced the challenge while trying to resist brain freeze and indulge in their treats. As the countdown reached its climax, Richard William Stenning, the official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, confirmed the new record achievement, stating, “You were all very patient, and you have broken a world record set in 2011.” The moment was joyfully celebrated with Queen’s anthem “We are the Champions” playing in the background as caps were tossed into the air.
This fun-filled event was meticulously planned for nearly two months by Hatsun Agro Product’s popular brand, Arun Icecreams, encapsulating the joyous essence of childhood through ice cream. C Sathyan proudly accepted the certificate in the presence of various schools, including Nellai Nadar Mat. Hr. Sec. School and multiple branches of the Narayana Group of Schools, among others. R G Chandramogan, Chairman of Hatsun Agro Product, expressed his delight, saying, “This is a cherished moment, to see 4,008 children setting a Guinness World Record in ice cream eating.”
The day commenced early as students arrived at the venue by 8 a.m. Each participant received a commemorative kit featuring a red-and-white cap and t-shirt. After donning their uniforms, students assembled in rows under careful supervision, in a specially cooled room perfect for ice cream consumption. An instructional video was screened on large displays while students engaged in practice runs without ice cream to prepare for the record attempt. Stewards monitored participation numbers and timing, with volunteers ready with large iceboxes filled with ice cream.
The official record attempt took place at noon, with lively Tamil and English pop music energizing the atmosphere. Satyanwiti, a Class VI student from Narayana Group of Schools, shared her excitement about the event, recalling that students were informed just two days earlier. Her friend, P Viruthika, expressed her enjoyment of the Jolly Train ice cream bar, adding through giggles, “I just wish we didn’t have to wait for so long.”
Chennai has previously made its mark in the world of Guinness records, such as when the tallest tower of cupcakes, measuring 12.69 meters (41 feet and eight inches), was constructed by Preethi Kitchen Appliances and Food Consulate at Forum Vijaya Mall on January 19, 2019. With this recent achievement, the city continues to shine in the realm of record-breaking events, uniting community spirit and fun through challenges that celebrate childhood joy.
