Kokrajhar’s Path to Recovery: Army Steps In Amidst Rising Tensions
Normalcy is gradually returning to the Kokrajhar district of Assam, previously affected by violence, as security forces maintain strict vigilance and Army units conduct patrols to prevent further unrest. Since the evening of January 20, officials have reported no new incidents, indicating a lull in tensions.
Recent clashes between the Bodo and Adivasi communities resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with another person dying in a separate road accident during the unrest. The initial violence arose from protests that escalated into arson and attacks on public property, prompting the administration to deploy additional security forces.
Officials have confirmed that four Army columns have been deployed in sensitive areas, while the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Assam Police conduct continuous patrols in affected neighborhoods. Security measures have intensified, with increased flag marches and checkpoints aimed at discouraging any attempts at regrouping or renewed violence.
Over 1,000 people are currently sheltered in relief camps established in five schools within the district. The local administration is supplying food, medical assistance, and essential items to displaced families, working to ensure their safe return once the situation stabilizes.
Prohibitory orders, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, remain in effect, and internet services have been suspended as a precaution against the spread of rumors and inflammatory content.
On the night of Monday, a vehicle was attacked by a mob near Mansingh Road in the Karigaon area, leaving two individuals from the Adivasi community injured. The mob later set the vehicle ablaze. One injured person has since been discharged from the hospital, while the other succumbed to injuries during treatment.
Tensions escalated earlier on Tuesday when members of the Bodo and Adivasi communities blocked a national highway, set a government office on fire, and attacked a police outpost. Police responded with baton charges and tear gas to disperse the crowd, resulting in injuries to several individuals, including some police personnel.
Senior officials are closely monitoring the evolving situation, keeping additional forces at the ready. The administration has urged the public to maintain peace and cooperate with security agencies, emphasizing that strict action will be taken against those perpetrating violence while efforts to restore order continue.
