Tripura Congress Rages Against Shankaracharya Attack, burns Modi and Yogi Effigies
On January 21, the Tripura Pradesh Congress organized a protest march in Agartala to denounce an alleged attack on Jagatguru Shankaracharya and holy monks by the Uttar Pradesh police. The demonstration took place in the Orient Chowmuni area, where Congress activists burned effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Senior Congress leader and Tripura MLA Sudip Roy Barman led the protest and addressed the media, highlighting the government’s actions.
Barman criticized the Uttar Pradesh government’s commitment to religious traditions, stating, “Those responsible for this incident in Uttar Pradesh cannot claim to be protectors of traditional religion. This incident has exposed them as hypocrites and political dealers.” He launched a fierce attack on both the central government and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), alleging that numerous ancient temples have been destroyed under the current regime. He claimed that a 1,300 to 1,400-year-old Ram temple in Delhi was demolished, and idols of Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman were dragged away using bulldozers.
He further alleged that religious structures in Kashi had suffered damage, including the destruction of a Shivling and an idol of Lord Ganesh. “Even Aurangzeb did not destroy so many temples,” he asserted, accusing the government of permitting widespread devastation of the country’s religious heritage over the past 11 years.
Barman also expressed concern over the government’s misleading tactics. “In the last 11 years, this government has turned some fools into blind devotees and blind devotees into fools. This is how they want to rule the country,” he claimed. He criticized organizations like the RSS and Bajrang Dal, arguing that they benefit from and support the ruling government.
According to Barman, the protest aimed to voice public anger against those responsible for the current issues in the country. “The people of the country have realized that governance has fallen into the hands of hypocrites, thieves, scoundrels, and cheats,” he concluded.
