Resist the Bullying: Amnesty Chief Calls on European Nations to Stand Strong Against Trump’s Greenland Threats

The leader of Amnesty International, Agnes Callamard, has urged European nations to stand firm against what she describes as global “bullies,” including US President Donald Trump. Speaking at the World Economic Forum, Callamard emphasized that growing appeasement of these leaders could jeopardize the post-World War II rules-based international order. “We need much more resistance,” she warned, highlighting that Europe’s credibility is on the line.

Callamard’s comments come as tensions rise over Trump’s controversial intentions regarding Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark that he has suggested could be controlled by the U.S. She stated that Europe must counteract coercive tactics such as tariffs and military threats, calling for a collective strength among European nations.

With Trump reiterating his plans to acquire Greenland-claiming it is essential for global security-European leaders are expressing their discontent. Notably, Germany and France have condemned his tariff threats as “blackmail.” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized Europe’s goal of preventing an escalation of this conflict as he prepares for a meeting with Trump in Davos this week.

Callamard further encouraged governments to show courage in the face of these pressures. “Stop thinking you can make deals with bullies… and avoid becoming victims of them,” she asserted, framing the Greenland controversy as part of a more extensive deterioration of international norms. “The U.S. bid to seize Greenland is only one indication that the world is facing the destruction of the rules-based order,” she cautioned.

In her critique, Callamard identified not just the actions of the U.S. but also the aggressions of other superpowers, such as Russia’s military actions in Ukraine and Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. She expressed concern over the absence of a viable alternative to the established order, warning that the ongoing erasure of international rules could lead to dire consequences. “The fact that it is being destroyed without any plan B should send shivers down all of our spines,” she added, outlining the risk of spiraling into chaos.

Callamard underscored that the European mission is rooted in more than economic considerations; it’s also about upholding values, humanity, and the rule of law. She urged leaders to draw on this historical context as they confront contemporary challenges, reaffirming a commitment to protecting human rights.

Concluding her remarks, Callamard issued a stark call to action: “Please stop it. Resist. Resist.” Her message resonates with urgency as Europe grapples with defending its values and maintaining its sovereignty in an increasingly complex global landscape.

The call for European unity against coercive international tactics highlights the critical intersection of geopolitics and human rights. As the world looks on, the response from European leaders will be crucial in determining the future of both their credibility and the broader international order.
