
Transform Your Game: Elite Training Camps for Athletes in Guwahati
In a significant advancement for Assam’s sporting framework, the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare, in collaboration with the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), has launched a high-performance training camp for athletes and coaches in Guwahati. This initiative focuses on seven different sports and aims to create a sustainable training model that aligns with India’s Olympic aspirations while also emphasizing talent identification and the professional development of coaches through modern methodologies.
The training camps for Chess, Table Tennis, and Tennis began on Friday, while the Taekwondo camp will start on Saturday. Kausar J. Hilaly, Secretary of Sports and Youth Welfare for the Assam government, inaugurated the camps, highlighting their objective to elevate coaching standards and support competitive pathways for athletes at both national and international levels. The collaboration with IIS is set to introduce internationally compliant high-performance programs in Taekwondo, Athletics, and Archery.
The Chess camp, held at the Civil Services Officers’ Institute in Khanapara, is led by Bulgarian coach Dejan Bojkov and Indian coach Vishal Sareen. It features 47 selected athletes and coaches from across the state and will run until January 27. Meanwhile, the Table Tennis camp is taking place at the Bhogeswari Phukanani Indoor Stadium in Dispur, under the guidance of international coach Sekpong Yomjinda from Thailand, with 52 participants and six coaches, concluding on January 24.
Additionally, a Tennis training camp is being conducted at the Department of Sports Tennis Courts in Dispur, supervised by Brazilian coach Vinicius Ono. This camp includes 32 boys and girls along with six coaches from Assam, also set to finish on January 24. Officials stated that this initiative reflects the Assam government’s ongoing commitment to support elite athletes and to foster an environment conducive to high-level sports training.
