Mahesh, an experienced hot air balloon pilot, elaborated on the intricate operation and maintenance required to keep these majestic balloons aloft. Central to their operation are LPG cylinders: each balloon is equipped with four-two with around 80 litres capacity and two holding about 60 litres. “Aviation regulations dictate that we carry at least double the fuel needed for the flight’s duration,” Mahesh explained. “Given that a typical flight lasts about one hour, we always bring enough fuel for at least two hours in the air.”
Safety remains a top priority, with every component of the balloon undergoing stringent scrutiny. The basket used in flights is manufactured by Ultramagic in Spain, a globally recognized manufacturer. Operators conduct daily inspections, post-flight checks, and annual assessments to ensure every part, including the crucial fuel lines, is meticulously monitored and replaced at scheduled intervals regardless of visible condition. Each balloon is outfitted with two burners, functioning akin to engines-one for standard operation and the second providing extra power during critical moments such as takeoff or abrupt weather changes.
Every flight is equipped with essential safety gear, including fire extinguishers, a certified first aid kit, and a 50-metre drop line. The drop line assists ground crews in safely managing the balloon during landings, particularly in unexpected wind conditions. Mahesh noted that a dedicated team of nearly 20 individuals is necessary for each balloon, ensuring effective ground operations, technical checks, and passenger safety.
Importantly, all commercial hot air balloons in India are registered aircraft. They operate under the oversight of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which mandates that each balloon displays a registration number and is maintained by DGCA-certified engineers. Pilots are also required to hold valid DGCA licenses. Mahesh shared insights from his professional journey, stating that while he’s been flying balloons for two years, he has worked in the aviation field for nearly 18. Training in Slovenia, he returned to India to complete the necessary regulatory processes for commercial flying.
“Unlike traditional aviation, logging hours in ballooning is more complex,” he said. “Flights are generally limited to about one hour daily and are heavily influenced by weather conditions.” Ballooning in India primarily occurs for only six to seven months a year, with winter being the peak season. The soaring summer temperatures and high winds often hinder balloon flights, leading to substantial passenger reductions or total suspensions when conditions become extreme.
