Greenland Government Stands Firm Against Trump’s Takeover Threats: ‘Absolutely Unacceptable Under Any Circumstance!’
Greenland’s government firmly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s ongoing assertions regarding American control over the Arctic island, labeling any such move as “unacceptable under any circumstance.” As Greenland remains an autonomous territory of Denmark, the government articulated its stance in a recent statement, emphasizing its commitment to sovereignty.
Trump has emphasized Greenland’s strategic significance, arguing that it is crucial for national security. He claimed that the United States would acquire the island “one way or the other,” asserting a proactive approach to countering Russian and Chinese interests in the region. On Sunday, he escalated his rhetoric, warning, “If we don’t act, Russia or China will, and I’m not letting that happen.” While he expressed a willingness to negotiate with Greenland, he reiterated his determination to secure the territory.
The U.S. has maintained a military presence in Greenland since World War II, citing its key location in the Arctic as a matter of national interest. This strategic importance, however, is met with staunch local opposition. Polls indicate that a majority of Greenlanders are against a U.S. takeover, showcasing deep-rooted resistance to external control.
In response to Trump’s takeover threats, European allies, including France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom, issued a joint statement supporting Denmark and Greenland. This solidarity underscores the international understanding of Greenland’s autonomy and the importance of respecting its governance.
In light of this support, the Greenlandic government reaffirmed its commitment to NATO, stating, “Based on the positive declaration from the six NATO member states regarding Greenland, the Government of Greenland will intensify efforts to ensure that the defense of Greenland is carried out within NATO.” The statement further emphasized that “Greenland will always be part of the Western defense alliance.”
Greenland has a complex history, having been a Danish colony until 1953, with home rule established in 1979. Today, discussions around loosening ties with Denmark are gaining traction among Greenlanders, reflecting a desire for increased self-determination.
As the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, Greenland stands firm in its position, navigating the tension between powerful interests while asserting its right to determine its future. This stance not only highlights the island’s strategic importance but also reinforces the values of sovereignty and autonomy that resonate deeply within its population.
