A 37-year-old streamer from Spain, identified as Sergio Jimenez, tragically died during a private New Year’s Eve livestream where he consumed alcohol and drugs for money, according to a report by People magazine. Jimenez participated in a paid challenge that required him to drink an entire bottle of whisky and take cocaine while viewers watched remotely. He had allegedly promised to ingest as much as six grams of cocaine along with the alcohol. The broadcast took a grim turn when he suddenly collapsed, and reports indicate he died before medical assistance could arrive.
In the early hours of January 1, Jimenez’s mother, Teresa, discovered him unresponsive in his bedroom. “I got up to go to the bathroom just before 2 AM and saw the door to his room was ajar. I asked him what he was doing, but he didn’t answer. I tried to go in, but there were clothes or something on the bedroom floor, and I couldn’t,” she told People. She noted that she continued to call out to him but received no response. “I could see him kneeling on the bed, as if he were praying,” she added.
Spanish authorities have commenced an investigation into the incident, which has been described as the first recorded fatality linked to a livestreamed challenge in the country. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death. Jimenez had previously gained attention through his appearances in videos by fellow streamer Simon Perez, known for drug use during livestreams.
In response to the event, the Catalonia police force, Mossos d’Esquadra, released a warning video on January 6, cautioning against viral challenges that could “endanger your life or physical safety.” The officers emphasized that such trends can lead to intoxication, physical and psychological harm, damage to one’s reputation, and potential legal consequences. “It is important to be aware that some trends can have consequences if they involve acts of vandalism or aggression,” an officer stated.
