Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Suresh Kalmapdi has passed away at the age of 81. According to reports, he was receiving treatment at the Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, where he died on Tuesday.
Notably, Kalmapdi faced serious corruption allegations during the Commonwealth Games held in Delhi in 2010, which led to his arrest at the time.
Kalmapdi had been unwell for some time, and he breathed his last while under medical care. His last rites are scheduled to take place at the Vaikunth Crematorium in Pune on Tuesday afternoon.
He is survived by his wife, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. Before his cremation, Kalmapdi’s body will be kept at Kalmapdi House for people to pay their last respects. He was a popular figure as a Congress leader in Pune.
Although he served as the state minister for railways, Kalmapdi was well-known in the Indian sports community, having held the position of President of the Indian Olympic Association. His name surfaced in connection with the corruption scandal related to the Commonwealth Games, leading to his expulsion from the Congress party.
In 2016, he was elected as the lifetime president of the Olympic Association, but a sports ministry inquiry into the election proceedings prevented him from taking on the role.
However, before his death, Kalmapdi was cleared of any wrongdoing regarding the Commonwealth Games scandal. In April, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) submitted a closure report on the Commonwealth Games case to a Delhi court.
The report clearly stated that, after extensive investigation, no evidence of financial misconduct was found associated with the Commonwealth Games. The court accepted the ED’s closure report. Previously, in 2014, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had also submitted a closure report stating that no corruption was detected in connection with the Commonwealth Games.
