In an inspiring display of communal solidarity, Chanderbagh village in Nangalkot upazila, Comilla district, has become a sanctuary for its flood-stricken residents. Severe flooding caused by relentless rains and the swelling Dakatiya river has submerged the homes of this predominantly Hindu community, driving villagers to seek refuge in a mosque.
Chanderbagh, home to approximately 230-250 people, has been rendered uninhabitable due to the floodwaters. Many villagers have taken to rooftops to stay above the water, while others have found shelter within the mosque. Resident Geeta Rani described the dire situation, highlighting the community’s reliance on minimal aid and the absence of government support, though neighboring villagers have offered dry food.
Sharif Ahmed Majumdar from the nearby Pipdda village helped provide shelter and noted the unprecedented scale of the flooding, which submerged even one-story houses and swept away vital construction materials.
Nangalkot upazila executive officer Suraiya Akhter Lucky confirmed her awareness of the crisis and committed to providing assistance following an inquiry.
This situation not only underscores the severity of Bangladesh’s flooding but also highlights the community’s resilience and unity in the face of disaster.
