Seven people were killed and 12 others injured in a bus accident in Almora, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday morning. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Devender Pincha, the private bus was transporting 19 passengers from Dwarahat to Ramnagar in Nainital when it plunged into a gorge around 9 am, resulting in six fatalities at the scene. The authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, including possible technical faults.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been actively involved in rescue operations. Of the six critically injured individuals, three were airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh while the other three were taken to Ramnagar for advanced medical care. The remaining injured passengers are receiving treatment at the government hospital in Bhikiyasain. Among the deceased, identified as Govind Ballabh (80), Parvati Devi (75), Nandan Singh (65), Tara Devi (50), Ganesh (25), Umesh (25), and Govindi Devi (58), there were four men and three women. In addition, 10 men and two women sustained injuries in the crash.
The bus fell approximately 200 meters into a gorge at a sharp bend in the road. An SDRF official noted that a technical fault likely caused the driver to lose control, but assured that the bus was not overloaded. Regional transport officials have been tasked with investigating the incident.
Registered in 2019, the bus has two pending fines for traffic and parking violations from Nagina and Najibabad in Uttar Pradesh. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences and instructed the district administration to ensure that all injured passengers receive prompt and appropriate medical attention. His office confirmed that the injured are being treated at nearby hospitals, with those in serious condition being moved to specialized medical facilities.
Victims hail from various localities within Almora district, including Jamoli and Dwarahat.
