Contractor Mukesh Jalan Arrested: Shocking Irregularities in Highway Project
Jorhat Police have arrested Mukesh Jalan, the owner of Sadguru Engineering & Allied Services Private Limited, amid allegations of significant irregularities and fraud connected to a four-lane National Highway project in the district. Police reports indicate that several complaints have been filed against Jalan, citing numerous financial discrepancies and deceptive practices during the project, which have prompted strong reactions from local contractors and stakeholders.
Local contractors claim that Sadguru Engineering abandoned the highway project, leaving the site unfinished and failing to settle outstanding payments, despite having received funds from authorities. This has led to widespread outrage, particularly as subcontractors assert that they were not compensated for their work.
In response to these grievances, a group of affected contractors filed formal complaints at the police station, accusing both Mukesh Jalan and the firm’s manager of fraud. Copies of the First Information Reports (FIRs) have been submitted to the relevant authorities for review.
Reports also suggest that Jalan disregarded directives from the Jorhat District Commissioner. Despite receiving funding from the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the company has allegedly failed to distribute payments to the subcontractors involved.
Furthermore, the Assam Forest Department has reportedly suffered due to the company’s alleged misconduct. Sadguru Engineering has not paid a forest royalty of Rs 3.36 crore, despite receiving multiple notices. The Jorhat Divisional Forest Officer has issued a final warning to the company, demanding the payment be made by November 26, threatening legal action if the dues remain unpaid.
Affected contractors have expressed concerns that Sadguru Engineering has already received a significant portion of the project’s finances. They have warned that if the NHIDCL and the Jorhat district administration do not take decisive action, they will organize strong protests along the National Highway.
Police officials confirmed that investigations are currently underway, and more legal actions may ensue based on the findings.
