11-Year-Old Puducherry Girl Dazzles with Underwater Bharatanatyam to Combat Plastic Pollution
An 11-year-old girl from Puducherry is making waves online by raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution in a truly unique manner. Eschewing a traditional stage or microphone, Thaaragai Aarathana chose to dive nearly 20 feet underwater to spotlight the threats posed to marine life by plastic waste. A trained Bharatanatyam dancer and certified diver, Aarathana performed a classical dance beneath the sea, adorned in full traditional costume, complete with jewelry and makeup. This captivating performance interwove art, activism, and bravery in a way seldom seen before.
A video of her underwater dance, shared on Instagram by Shubham Bhardwaj, has gone viral, attracting significant attention. The post’s caption read, “Thaaragai Aarathana, The Girl Who Turned Dance Into an Ocean-Saving Mission.” The footage showcases her moving gracefully through the ocean currents, with the sea as her stunning backdrop. Relying solely on her expressions and movements, Aarathana’s gestures were deliberately crafted to draw attention to the destructive impact of plastic waste on marine ecosystems.
In the video, Bhardwaj elaborates on what inspired Aarathana’s mission. During one of her dives, she witnessed turtles ensnared in fishing nets, an experience that profoundly impacted her. This event motivated her to take action for ocean conservation. Since then, she has personally helped remove around 3,000 kilograms of plastic waste from the sea, while her father, who has been engaged in similar cleanup efforts for almost 18 years, has cleared over 37,000 kilograms of marine debris.
The social media response has been overwhelmingly positive, with users flooding the comments with admiration and support. One user hailed her parents, saying, “Salute to her mother and father who have such a big heart great courage beta.” Another remarked, “We all must respect her talent and message.” Many offered blessings and praise, with one individual saying, “Narayan bless you in multiple ways in your life,” and another adding, “India needs more Indians like them.”
